Baguette

Baguette

Ingredients

  • 500g (4 cups) bread flour
  • 10g (2 tsp) salt
  • 7g (2 tsp) instant yeast
  • 350ml (1.5 cups) lukewarm water

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and yeast (keep salt and yeast on opposite sides initially).
  2. Gradually add the lukewarm water and mix until a rough dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–7 minutes.

2. First Rise

  1. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

3. Shape the Baguettes

  1. Punch down the dough and divide it into 2–3 equal pieces.
  2. Shape each piece into a baguette: Flatten into a rectangle, fold the long edges inward, and roll it into a cylinder. Pinch the seam to seal.
  3. Roll gently to elongate the dough to your desired baguette length.

4. Second Rise

  1. Place the shaped baguettes on a floured baking sheet or a baguette pan. Use parchment paper if needed.
  2. Cover lightly with a towel and let them rise for 30–45 minutes, until slightly puffy.

5. Preheat the Oven

  1. Preheat the oven to 230°C (450°F).
  2. Place a tray of water in the bottom of the oven to create steam (this gives the baguettes their crisp crust).

6. Score and Bake

  1. Using a sharp knife or razor, make 3–4 diagonal slashes on each baguette.
  2. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

7. Cool and Serve

  1. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
  2. Enjoy your fresh homemade baguette with butter, cheese, or any accompaniment of choice!

However, its exact origins are debated: France : The first known recipe appeared in a 1691 French cookbook by François Massialot, a chef for royalty. England : A similar dish called "Trinity Cream" or "Cambridge Burnt Cream" was served at Trinity College, Cambridge, in the 17th century. Spain : Spain’s "Crema Catalana" is very similar but uses milk and is thickened with cornstarch instead of cream and eggs.
